Cool TV Cards-Worth it?

I have a total experience level of precisely 'nil' when it comes to these
Never used one, never seen the results on a monitor. The scenario me and the missus have are that whilst one of us are working away on the computer (which we keep in the study) it would be nice to have some kind of pop up screen to watch a little terrestial tv ocasionally. We've already 3 televisions in the house and don't want to buy any more!

Thanks.

I've got an AverTV DVB-T, standard issue with "Tiny" Machines but not especially highly regarded in the knowledgeable community AFAIK. Feeds to a 17" 16ms TFT screen, and does the job quite satisfactorily. Works with a portable aerial and picks up all the Freeview Channels that I want (inc Radio). I only want it for 'casual' use so I'm quite happy.

I can recommend the Hauppauge PVR350. I use it principally for the hardware MPEG2 encoder but the TV display quality was a surprise...Id had a WinTV card years ago which was ****e so I wasnt expecting a deal. The downsides of the PVR350 are its inability to deal with widescreen transmissions and the lack of DVB support.

Btw: if youre after DVB I suggest the WinTV Nova PCI; I believe that they record the DVB signal without processing it so you get superb quality recording without the need for an expensive MPEG2 encoder.

DVB-T is transmitted in MPEG2 so you dont need the H/W based encoders/decoders
