Low Sound Volume on Win 98
The PC is an old e-Vectra machine running 98, has been working reasonably fine. Since we got ADSL up and running i have been getting to grips with being able to have the radio on etc. In order to run this i have downloaded both Real player and windows media player on two separaet occassions, i.e. 1 then removed and then the other.
At present neither are loaded, but what i have found is that the sound that is outputed through the monitor speakers is very low.
I have tried the monitor settings and that does not help.
I have gone into Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking Multimedia. To get to the playback volume, this lists the preferred device as Crystal WDM Audio when you click on the volume control it tells me the programme has not been installed. But if you look the sound card driver up it says that it is working properly!!!!
All noices (windows little jingle noises) are very very quiet/ non existant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to install the sound drivers. Windows is using the default drivers which may cause this volume issue.
Assuming you have onboard sound, and not a soundcard? The sound drivers are usually part of the chipset drivers you get with the motherboard. If you dont have them you can get them off the mobo manufacturer's website.
Edited to say, have you got a volume slider icon in your taskbar? Do a right mouse button on that/open volume controls, and see if you can increase the volumes there.

I Don't have a sound level on the task bar but I've tried the following to get to it
Ive also gone into the driver setup and told it to update the driver with the latest version, which it goes through all the motions of and then just tells me I am already running the latest version.
Not sure how I'd tell the difference, but due to age and cheapness of the machine I'd go for the onboard sound.
