If people run home networks with these cheap broadband routers it'll be set for DHCP, so the Xbox would pick everything up from that. If not, then either set the router to be a DHCP server (you'll need to check the manual for exact instructions) and then the XBox should be set as a DHCP client.
If not, then you need to set IP address, Subnet mask (uniques address like your house number and street name), Default Gateway (your broadband router) and DNS server (either the broadband router if it does DNS queries OR the DNS servers at your ISP).
DNS servers resolve logical names to IP address. IP addresses (192.168.0.2, for example) is what devices on the Internet use to communicate with each other. Everyone doesn't want to remember numbers so they use domain names www.microsoft.com. That name has to resolve to an IP address somewhere on the planet, so DNS servers keep a live list of the mapping between names and numbers.
If you look at the Ip information on your PC it'll give you an idea what settings are required on the XBox.
winipcfg command for Windows 9x
ipconfig /all command for Windows Xp (run this from a Command Prompt)
