Question Connecting a Mac to SBS2003

Hi

SBS2003 Premium, 45 pc users, 1 Mac, .local network, Mac OSX

I need to connect a Mac to an SBS2003 network & am expecting this to be trouble! The Mac will need to access email (I've sourced Office 2004), share files & print to a network printer.

Is there any info how to do this please?

Regards
Nick

I've done Mac's to SBS 2000 Nick but not 2003.

From memory, the key was 'extending' the standard shares you made via the Shared Folders section under Computer Management. There was a sort of Wizard that would allow Mac's to see the share.

what's SBS2003? Assuming it's Windows 2003 Server?

Mac OS X supports the SMB protocol, so you can use that to connect to the Server, so, go to the "go" menu, select "connect to server" then type in smb://nameofserver/ and click connect.

This should display a dialog asking you which SMB/CIFS shared volume you want to access.

If you don't want to use SMB, then you'll need Services for Macintosh on the 2003 server to provide AFP access for macs.

When it comes to printers, open up the printer setup utility and click 'add' to add a new printer, you should be able to select 'windows printers' and then it should list the printers on the network.

Thanks for your replies. I have a feeling that the Mac connection will be a little more difficult. I remember reading something about the .local network being an issue. Anyone know about this?

SBS2003 is a bundle of W2003 Server, ISA 2000, Exchange 2003, SQL 2000 & IIS5 all held together by wizards. Very useful for users up to about 50 that only need a single server box.

Both Mail and Entourage rely on Outlook Web Access and IMAP being enabled on your Exchange server. There's no native Outlook client for Mac OS X. I presume you also want to have your Mac authenticate against Active Directory and have roaming profiles (network home directories) just as you would on a PC. This is possible but can be a bit of a bugger to get up and running successfully. Printing is probably the easiest thing to do.
