Have recently replaced my internel broadband modem with a netgear DG834G wireless modem/router thing connected to 2 pcs via cable and laptop via wireless. Previuosly i was able to use remote desktop to access friend/family pcs but cannot now connect.I'm assuming it's something to do with the router.I've even tried disabling norton internet security on both machines to see if it was that but wasn't.
Any ideas

It must be the port settings on your firewall (which I presume your router has).

Shaun is right, you need to open the port for remote desktop. Port number is 3389.

Consult the netgear website or your manual
