Red face What is wrong....

...with my bloody DVD rewriter??

I have just fitted a LG GSA4163 16X DVD Dual Layer R/RW/RAM Internal IDE to my computer. The computer seems quite happy with it, no reported snags. When I try to write information to a DVD+R disc the software just seems to freeze randomly. I've tried different software (CD Burner XP Pro, Deep burner, etc) but they all freeze somewhere along the line. There are no reported problems from the PC or the software. The program just doesn't respond. The information I'm trying to write is just holiday snaps and movies so it's not particularly tricky info. Due to the fact that all the software is freezing, I would assume that the problem is computer based. Is it a memory problem? The computer has not alerted me to any problems whatsoever.

Has anybody got any ideas??

From the write ups, this DVD rewriter doesn't produce coasters.....I've got 5 coasters from my first 6 attempts

DJ Dunk,

Can you be a bit more specific about the IDE channels? I did a straight swap with my existing CD-RW drive using the same power, sound and ribbon connections. I've just tried a burn on a CD-RW disc and it worked perfectly so it only appears to affect the DVD side of things. It doesn't work with either DVD+R or DVD+RW discs.

You have checked the device manager to see if there are any reported issues there?

Can you confirm what you have on each IDE channel ?

IDE0 - Master =
IDE0 - Slave =
IDE1 - Master =
IDE1 - Slave =

First thing I would check is that the drive either the master on its own channel; or its the slave with a HDD on he same channel; or the master on a channel with an inferior speed drive as the slave.

Andrew,

There are conflicts in Device Manager.

DJ Dunk,

I'm not sure how to check the IDE channels. I did fit as a slave to another LG DVD player drive. I moved the jumper to SL as that is how I fitted the previous CD rewriter drive. I had no problems with that drive at all.

Scotty,

I will consider DVD-R discs once I get it working properly.

Open up the case and have a look I'm assuming from your info that the new drive is the slave on IDE1 and your DVD-ROM as the master.
I would not put the new DVD writer as the slave with a DVD-Rom as the master. Swap them over IMO.

DVD Writers need to transfer much more data than your old CD-RW.

Once you've swapped them over, try recording some data to it from your HDD.

DJ Dunk,

Can I leave the ribbon cable as it is and just swap over the little jumper clips on each drive so the RW is the master?

No, you should have the master as the end socket and the slave in the middle. Don't use cable select on your jumpers, just master/slave

It looks like there may be a way ahead with this. I've just tried my sixth different type of software which was Nero 6 and it also failed. However, what Nero did that the others didn't was tell me that it had a problem reading the data. I've only being trying to write my holiday stuff so I tried a whole load of other info on a DVD-RW disc and lo and behold it worked first time. The only problem is that all my holiday photos and movies all play fine
