Default McAfee Virus Scan has detected......

Help me out here please guys. I'm trying to help fix a problem on a friends PC who is over 200 miles from me.

PC is running XP Home, with McAfee Virus Scan. When started, the PC gets as far as the Welcome screen. Clicking on a users name/icon brings up an Alert Dialogue saying "McAfree Virus Scan has detected a virus, you should do a scan of all drives" (or words to that effect), no clues are provided as to the identity of the virus. The PC then reboots, gets back to the welcome screen and the same thing happens, therefore cannot get into Windows, therefore cannot run a scan!

Sounds like he actually has a virus - that's not the sort of thing I've seen McAfee do. Has your mate tried loading a DOS based AV program, such as the one produced by F-Secure? Sounds like you need to clean the machine before Windows loads.

can you start up in safe mode ?
If you can do so & throw all virus scans at it.

You need to disable the reboot function, instruction are on symantec.com and mcaffees website, disable system restore, then run removal tool.

What R. says. Safe mode, then run 'Scan for Viruses' from Start | All Programs | McAfee | McAfee VirusScan. We found it, chances are we'll remove it.
