Cool

the reason being is that i never had antivirus software on my pc before sircam
after i got sircam, i rushed out and bought mcafee on the advice of a friend. as soon as i loaded it, my pc died a death. had to have my pc fixed big style, windows reloaded etc ( you can tell i know sod all about pc's eh ), went out and bought norton after i got my pc back. a lot of guys on here were recommending norton, so went and got that too( it was going cheap in pc world bundled with norton utilities )
so, im now a very paranoid pc knownowt, perhaps going into overkill i know, but i really dont want to have this **** again.
any advice greatly appreciated
cheers

Virus checkers conflict with enough other applications without doing it to each other. Wouldn't try it.

One or the other, and make sure you are firewalled as well -

cheers dave, downloaded that tonight too. not entirely sure what it does ( ie does it check for latest viruses) and also not entirely sure what a firewall is either, but nevertheless i got it now. anything to make life harder for hackers, and other low lifes who wanna **** my pc.
cheers!

Turbo,

do you ever back things up?

I am being serious here - if you have things (data, documents, whatever) that you consider important - you MUST back them up to somewhere just in case!!!

Forget viruses, worms and trojans - what if your hard drive "blew up"?!?!

Your machine will run like a dog - never understood that phrase - if you run two resident virus scanners.

Run McAfee, if it goes **** up I'll help you out... anyone from Symantec in the house??

if you got Norton cheap you might have the cheapo version that doesnt come with email protect. If it doesnt then you might as well dump Norton and stick with mcafee.

I use NAI VirusScan 4.5 - never had any trouble with it on my home PC. Two virus scanners is asking for trouble IMO.

Spudgun,

I would recommend that you get a firewall program as well as the antivirus stuff. I got one bundled with a copy of Norton anitvirus which I brought after I discovered that my computer was infected by a virus. Thankfully it didn't turn out to be serious, but I've now started taking extra precautions.

The firewall has recently detected 3 attempted intrusions on to my computer, the most recent was an hour a go when I got a message saying "Security Alert : attempted intrusion by Backdoor/Subseven Trojan Horse"

I don't know how serious this was, but I'm damn glad I've got this software fitted.
