Default Mac fans - Compressing images help please

Hey guys, anyone know what the best way of compressing a 5 - 600kb jpg image to go on a website, it's 400x320 on the site so don't want to lose too much quality...

Tried the image converter app but not really had much luck. Probably more how i'm doing it than anything else.

Cheers guys

Photoshop, save for web from file menu.

What is the image, can it be cut up? Remove white space and save bits as separate gif/jpgs... Without seeing the image, hard to say.

To add, it will create a file that is 72dpi and around 30-50k maybe.. (depends on the image) 400x320 is not that big...

As above, use Image Ready (PhotoShop/Save for web). Try reducing the dpi in the image down to 96dpi for web viewing to see if that helps and use slices to breakup the image so that it loads in pieces rather than all at once.
