Default Hijacked!!

Hello

My gf's laptop has been infected by all sorts of hijackers/key loggers/etc etc after her borther clicked on something he shouldnt have. I've tried programs like Ad-aware and Spybot to get rid of these but its not working.

Can anyone suggest some other program i could try because its driving her mad and i dont really want to do a reinstall.

First advice: note which site the hijacker is sending her comp to, or else the name of any spurious toolbars etc, then Google for them - odds are someone can tell you how to get rid of it.

Thumbs up

Adaware www.lavasoft.de and Microsoft Antispyware www.microsoft.com, are both good, the Microsoft take on things is a new program and having some teething problems but they're both quality and remove most problems. Pest patrol gave me some problems, and I don't rate SpyBot to be honest.

To stop spyware from keeping coming back it might be an idea to use an alternate browser such as opera www.opera.com or firefox www.mozilla.com/firefox 99% as of spyware targets IE users. Firefox will probably be the best one to use as it's more or less the same interface as IE

Good luck! If the infection is very bad it might be an idea to format and reinstall windows.

do your spyware check in Safe Mode - most of them won't load in safe mode and can be removed easier as they are not "in use".

Spybot, Ad-Aware and MS Antispyware are a good combo. Also try Norton's online free virus scanner (www.symantec.com) in the Security Response Section.
