Question about remote desktop and XP Home Edition...
just need confirmation on something, can someone who has a XP Home Edition please confirm you have the remote desktop client on your start menu under accessories\communications folder and whether it was there by default or you had to install it as an extra?
I have checked the Microsoft site and it says Home Edition does not support Remote Desktop but can be used as a client, so I am assuming this means you can not set up a home edition to connect to with remote desktop but can access xp pro machines with the remote desktop client from a home edition machine. I have set several users up here to use rd on their pcs here from home but some have home edition at home and need to make sure they have the client available to connect before i get flooded with a load of phone calls saying they can't find it!
TIA

Hello Bob,
From the MS page:
Q.Is Remote Desktop available on Windows XP Home Edition?
A.No, however you can upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional to get Remote Desktop. You can use Windows XP Home Edition as the client for accessing your Windows XP Professional computer running Remote Desktop.
Get the latest client here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...dclientdl.mspx
Cheers,
Dunk
Edit: Just realised I've repeated what you said. But you won't be able to access the Home edition PC from the XP PC because it built in as part of OS, but you CAN use Remote Assistance instead.

Cheers mate, thats what I was looking at, but was assuming that because it says you can use it as the client it already has the client installed, ie the remote desktop icon. This si what I need someone with home edition to confirm for me. The download from how I understood it was for all other operating systems other than XP. I need this confirmed otherwise when the home edition users get home and can't use it they will throw a wobbly

OK found the answer
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteclient.mspx

The client software is installed by default on computers running Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition.

Hello
I can also thoroughly recommend the free version of http://www.logmein.com.
It allows you to control the PC from any web browser, even the nasty ones that I have at work that firewall off everything.
Steve.
