Probably best value for cash / long term would be a socket 939 motherboard supporting PCI express and SLI capability.

Coupled with a AMD 64 bit 3200 processor, which can be upgraded even now to an AMD 64 4000+ or an FX 51, 52, or 55.

A gigabyte motherboard with the above can be had for £84 inc vat

The processor should be under £100 from www.ebuyer.com or www.aria.co.uk

And a single SLI capable Graphics card to start you off (PCI-E)

yes I agree. No reason to look at Intel at the moment. AMD have all bases covered.

If you are going to buy a new graphics card then look at the PCI Express motherboards - if you are going to stick with an existing AGP one then the MSI Neo2 socket 939 is the motherboard to go for - try www.scan.co.uk too - they usually have good prices. Definately AMD though - I'm after the 3500 chip....
When looking at processors check that it is a 90Nm chip you get - they are the later production run ones and run slightly quicker and cooler.

Or take a look at the Asus 939 NF4/SLI boards and the 939 AGP boards, very good reviews on all. Also recommend the AMD3500+ as the way to go.
