Question Need some advice

I am in the process of ordering a computer from Pc specialist where you can construct your own computer how you want and they build it

But i need some advice over the cpu....cos i'm thick

Right i have opted so far for a AMD Athlon 64bit 4000 (2.4ghz) 1mb L2 cache (939 pin)....now one of my friends says thats ok,but someone else said that he is running a pentium 4 @ 3.2 ghz and reckons that 2.4ghz is slow compared to his also the AMD overheats a lot....

Any help would be appreciated

TIA

What a load of cod your friends spouting lol.

A64 CPUs are the current leader for gaming. So if you like to play games then I would definitely go down the A64 route.Pentium chips used to be pretty good at video encoding etc but now the playing field is pretty level and if you do a search on the net for comparisons between the two you will find that there is not an awful lot in it.
The early AMD chips used to run quite toasty but that was all sorted out a few years ago and its only really the nutters who whack huge voltages through the chips so they can overclock them that have issues.Equally the same applies to Pentium chips.
Anyway if you are speccing the build why not ask for a better/quieter heatsink if you think that you have some headroom if you decide to overclock in the future?(this applies if you go Intel or AMD)

Finally to clear up the speed confusion Athlon market their chips at the equivalent Pentium speed not their true clock speed, funny this as Intel are now going down the same route.

To summarise you cant go wrong with either a Pentium or a Athlon cpu nowadays but its usually a case of the Athlons being cheaper than the equivalent Pentium.

Can I ask what the rest of your proposed spec is?

Cheers

Steve
