security enabling in wireless networks
this is what i see when i am on line
is this ok? my router is supposedly WEP enabled,but the properties box says 'open' and encryption is 'disabled'

Your router may be WEP capable but looking at your screenshot it ain't enabled. Use your browser to check the router settings - http://192.168.0.1 is a common address but check the manual. You should change the SSID to something other than default as well as enabling security. If your router can use WPA use that instead of WEP as it's harder to crack.

I'd change the IP range, SSID, knock SSID broadcasting off, lock down MAC addresses, use WPA etc, etc.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound arsey. I'll put money on plenty of people thinking they're using thier wireless network when they're happily slowing down next doors.

Not only might some users inadvertly be using someone elses bandwidth they're obviously open to hijacking themselves. I've seen plenty of open networks around on my travels out here to Oz (good ole' NetStumbler).

ta,now enabled,after i scared myself by setting the WEP key and not writing it down! had to use a cable and go in via a lan and retrieve it

Using NetStumbler, Ive 'found' three unsecured networks;.....and I havent even left the house yet! Im tempted to save myself £25 per month...
