Question Mac Powerbook - Why is it.....

....restarting after a shutdown. Follow the usual procedure, close all apps, empty trash, select shutdown. Bl00dy thing does the shutdown, I hear the HD spin down, then CHUNG ! It starts up again Only solution I've found is to ensure power supply is off, and pull the battery as soon as the HD has stopped

Easy to fix, or clean install required

G3 Powerbook 400mhz, 10gb, 320mb (about 4 yr old) running latest update of Panther.

CB,

Do a search on the Apple support site on how to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) for that particular PowerBook. Or try zapping the PRAM. That should sort it out hopefully.

If not, it could be a corrupted Energy Saver preferences file (.plist) which is also easy to delete and re-create.

One other thing to check, is the "restart after power failure" box ticked in the Energy Saver preference pane? Not sure if it's shown on a PB, but the poor thing could be getting confused.

Cheers!
Alex

Let us know how you get on. The rolleyes have made me paranoid that I've just baffled you with PMU this and PRAM that and you haven't got a clue what I'm on about

Thumbs up

PRAM I know, CMD/ALT/R/P on restart, release after second CHUNG

Preferences in the LIBRARY, will create a new one after deleting old.

Check System Preferences for "power failure" check box.

Not too sure about that PMU thing, but that's what Apple Tech Support is about

Thanks guys Will try in the morning

Seems to have worked (on one test anyway).

Ditched the "powermanagement.plist" file, reset the "energy saver" prefs and then restarted with PRAM zap. Tried a shutdown from the login window and so far seems OK.

Thanks for the help
