Website creation for numpties!!!!
Is there any good website editing programs out there as i fancy having a go at designing and publishing a website (dont say Dreamweaver 'cos i am thick)
what about Frontpage to create a simple static 5 page website.
having done this can i get it hosted for free and what is the best way to make sure that it has good search engine placement.
Cheers guys
Alternatively is there anyone in the Oldham/Gtr Manchester area that does cheap websites

I know people sneer at Front page but it is easy to use. You could create a basic five page webbie in about ten to twenty minutes - if you knew how to use it. Personally I forked out the money to do an evening course in using FP and in general website design - which would probably be a lot cheaper than getting someone else to do it for you, unless you know someone who does the work.

if you need to buy a site and name go to oneandone.co.uk they do v cheap packages and you get a website creator with it, basically you just pick the layout and change it to suit your self

Hi!
There are stacks of useful sites that can help you get around design, hosting and most importantly, search engine optomisation, these two are a good start:
http://www.searchengineforums.com/ap...n/Ultimate.cgi
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php?
There are lots of template sites out there, you can browse the layouts and buy for 20-30 dollars and just insert the blurb and modify the graphics. Not a bad way to start and you'll learn by fiddling with them.
Dreamweaver is actually not a brain melter but if you're able to get Front Page it isn't bad at all.
BTW. Key to getting a good rank on search engines is to choose a web name that is also a key word, title pages with keywords and ensure the content is focused on the keywords you select and then make sure you meta descriptions are also right as many engines use your meta descriptions. Don't forget to alt tag images with keywords and name the images with keywords.

I've been with them for just over a year and I've had so many problems with them it's practically unbelievable.
Here's a few highlights:
- They passed a 'debt' (that they didn't inform me about) of mine to a debt collection agency. Luckily, after a month of going back and forwards, they admitted that they didn't tell me about the 'debt' and removed an added £15 for passing it onto the agency.
- It took me, get this, six months for me to cancel my hosting package with them.
- The support staff via phone were rude and rather quite aggressive towards me.
- If you wanted a reply from them regarding billing, you would have to send the e-mail four times, to every 1&1 e-mail address they have on their web site, only for an indirect response, not relating in the slightest to your problem.
- Transferring domain names away from them is hell - they just can't let go. If you can, register your domain names somewhere else and have them point the DNS to 1&1, that's if you make the mistake of going with them.
Don't give them the chance to put you through what they've put me through.

Theres an endless choice of people to host a website for you, ranging from the smaller specialists who will charge you a higher fee but provide excellent service, through to the cheaper end of the market that will take your money but limit your bandwidth, be useless on the phone, and make it near as damnit impossible to take your domain name elsewhere.
If you are using the website as a business tool, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you spend money on a professional hosting outfit that will not give you the run around. I'd also seriously consider going through some of the design forums that are out there to see whats hot and not so hot in webdesign. It will help you avoid many of the common pitfalls and problems that first time webdesigners can make, if you intend to create the site yourself.
IF this is a non professional/business requirement, and just a bit of fun for yourself, you can probably load your website up onto your isp's free webspace (you normally get some when you sign up) and then register a domain and point it to your free webspace.

Please, anyone but 1&1 Internet.
i've cancelled a site i never set up and was no longer using, i logged in and cancelled it no problem, it took five minutes,
i've emailled them and always got replies the same day,
give them a go if your just starting because the $20-$30 dollar you could pay for a template, will get you almost a years hosting on the basic package

Maybe so, but that still doesn't rule out my experiences.
I was using their top professional package too, didn't stop them dragging me through sh*t.

I use 1&1 but lost some prized domain names through their crappy service. I was trying to transfer from my previous american company to 1&1. The domains were locked at the american company so the status on my 1&1 account ended up being suspended at 'wait' mode. Even after I unlocked them on the American host and informed 1&1 I was left sitting there waiting for the transfer. My 1&1 account continued showing 'waiting', meanwhile some other sod had already grabbed them!
Of course this doesn't mean they're web page stuff is bad.

Yes Ive been with 1&1 for quite a few years, on the whole pretty good although recently got a debt chasing letter even though I had updated my credit card details on the webiste and over the phone! In terms of what you get with their package its very good and I have never had a problem either transferring domains in or out, what I have found is that (for me) their email reliability is not good enough so I moved some stuff to titan which has better reliability although the site admin tools are very limited but they are pretty cheap too.
