PC playing up - want to get rid of everything and start afresh
I'm having big problems with PC at the mo. I want to burn off important stuff onto a CD but PC won't let me do it! I think I have a few viruses eating away at some of my software which is making my PC unstable.
I've got a partitioned C Drive. The D Drive part only has Recycled Bin and 4 other small files on it. Would it work if I copied my drivers over into the partitioned section + other stuff that I should keep, then format the rest of the C Drive?
+ I currently have Windows '98. Whats the best way of removing windows '98 and putting something like XP on?
What do you guys think?
Sorry if this does not read too well but I had a heavy night last night!
thanks
Nick

you shouldnt need to copy drivers over if you are going to win xp.
what sort of stuff do you want to keep. if its just pics and docs and nothing out of the normal you could put them on the d drive then format c drive using the win xp disc and build it from that. Windows xp cd also has a files and settings transfer wizzard to help you do this. just put the xp cd key in and choose perform additional tasks then you can select what settings and files to save. make sure you save it to d drive (it will be a compressed file called UMC or something like that). Then leave d drive alone while building xp and your files will still be there even though c drive now has xp on it

do yourself a favour.
buy another hard drive (they are dirt cheap now) maxtor 40/80/120gb
then install the new os on this drive.
install a decent A/v program.
then put your old drive in as a secondary slave drive.
copy any data you want.
then format the secondary drive.
bingo.
