Default Jack? New AV engine 4400?

Here's a weird one for you.

Several p.c.'s running AV 4.5.1. with Win2K sp2 with dats 4406, and engine 4320 were running at nigh on 100% CPU utilization.

I suggested the usual sdat /f to force a complete re-install as the incrementals sometimes cause problems.

This didn't work, so the support guys upgraded to 7.1 and still had the same problem.

Then upgraded to v8.0i and STILL the same problem... out of a sense of desparation they upgraded to engine 4400 and the problem went away.

Any ideas? I'm not comfortable with going to 4400 until its fully tested, so I need to know why the engine update fixed the problem.

One suggestion here is that the DATs are superceding the engine and the utilization is a symptom of this.

Any help or pointers you can give would be much appreciated. (for example is SP4 required?)

Cheers

Kieran

From http://www.mcafeesecurity.com/uk/dow...es/default.asp

The "4400 Engine Package For Use with McAfee AutoUpdate Architect & ePO 3.x" has been removed from the update site due to potential compatibility issues with the DAT updating mechanism. McAfee will release a revised update package for use with McAfee AutoUpdate Architect & ePO 3.x by Wednesday 17th November.
Any relevance to your situation?

Yeah, we wondered about that but the problem existed before the upgrade to 4400...

We have an article on NAI that seems relevent, it looks like the .evt files are corrupted, and need deleting, so we're gonnna try that.

Thanks for the reply!

Are you running Office XP? I'm told that the latest engine scans XML in a more efficient manner. Other than that myself and a techie to my right have no idea.
