Default dots per inch ? please explain

when they says "dots" do they mean pixels ?

Cos surely a 640x480 desktop on a 15" wide screen, equates to 640/15 = 43 pixels per inch

On a 1280x1024 desktop on the same 15" wide screen, this would mean 1280/15 = 85 pixels per inch

so when people like Adobe claim 72dpi for a computer screen, are they just using a nominal figure ?

Dots Per Inch should be used for measuring printer resolution. This is different from pixels per inch on screens or images.

I really don't know why Adobe are obsessed with 72dpi as it means nothing in real terms on a computer screen nowadays.

Personally, I would ignore the Adobe dpi setting and concentrate to actual pixel size of images as this is more important when you need to print anything off.

There's some calculators on the web that will convert PPI to actual DPI on a printer.
