Most mobile trackers use both systems.

The 2nd link has a demo on it.

Link looks a little odd but should work!!

www.vodafone.co.uk

Click on business user and then down the left side is a list, tracking is near the bottom.

Complete different technology. But with GPRS you can track position although its not as acurate as GPS. As you move, your phone will continously attach to the nearest base station which is providing the strongest connection to your nearest cell.

[Pedantic mode]

Actually a it doesn't have to be GPRS for this. GSM will do just fine (Sony X somatorother)

Puff is your man to speak to about this - he's done a lot of work on tracking solutions.

They're actually quite complimentary if you're looking to demo a simple/cheap tracking system. A microcontroller could obtain data from GPS receiver for current position (NMEA serial protocol is widely supported and well documented) and then transmit data back to a host using a GSM device (again, most data capable GSM phones will act as a standard serial modem with Hayes commands). The advantage of GPRS as the transmission medium is that it is always on, has excellent coverage and is billed by data transferred rather than time connected.

You could even use the micro to log data which you could download when the unit returns to base, then if there is a problem with transmission you still have a record.

what we thought of was using phones are a bike computer. Using GPRS(thought) to pin point map possitions. Then using an altimeter for height above sea level, that way if the bikes climbing how high its travelled upwards etc
