Anyone use ESX Server ??
more so specifically with SUSE Enterprise Server 9, and running on Dual Opterons ?
having a bit of a mare installing the 64 bit version, kernel keeps rebooting the virtual machine on the installation program, the x86 version installs and runs ok eventually

Damn u Rev
and here was me thinking someone else uses it
Well for the time being, ive aborted the job, as I was trying to get it running on an unsupported server, with hardware in the server, that is unsupported hardware wise, and software that isnt supported under ESX either
So now the customer is going to buy the server they should have from the start of the project

Are you talking about VMware mate? If so, yes, I've used it and still use it at home. Ideal for running many computer OS's under one computer. Very hand for simulating an Active directory setup and many other uses.
I run it on my AMD Athlon XP 1.53gig and runs fine with W2003/XP etc.

Yep it is VMware, but not the workstation edition, this is the top of the range product, ESX Server, which is a very small Linux Kernel, based on Redhat I believe, and it only hosts Guest OS's doesnt really have one of its own so to speak
Basically the story is this
Customer wants ESX Server with 2 SUSE 9 Enterprise Servers on it running Novell eDirectory, DirXML, & eXtend Director Standard Edition
They bought a server (with RAID but isnt supported in the particular server they bought)
The server is a HP DL145 Dual Opteron Proc, with 4 Gb Ram
This is unsupported by ESX Server, and ESX still isnt Opteron support for full 64 bit OS's, therefore the SUSE AMD64 will not install, but the x86 one does in 32 bit mode
However the server has been so flakey (using unsupported hardware, and basically held together with string - well cable ties) we have ditched trying to get it work, and the customer is now buying a DL585 which IS supported using ESX Server
