I mainly use Itunes to manage my mp3's as its soo easy to alter the tag names and make playlists unlike Wmp9. I haven't used 10 yet. Is it still at the beta stage ?

They have changed the iPod FAQ's section three times so far!

You have to love the irony in the second one, MS behaving as the consumer champion promoting choice, as long as you choose their proprietary format over someone else's

iPod, choosing to only support their own proprietary DRM format
I make all my stuff mp3, then it'll play on just about anything. Can't be arsed with apple's or ms's own formats, too restrictive.
Will have a butchers at mp10. Incidentally, can you get iTunes for the PC?

In MS's defense, if you switch Media Player (9 for example) to the Library, it looks very similar to iTunes or the default look of the new Media Player.
The fact that they've now defaulted to this type of view is a bit surprising, but I can't say they've knicked the layout from Apple since it was there in the previous version.

The most funny part is that they are going on about choice and the iPod restricting choice. Where the iPod works with both Windows and Mac, WMP10 only works with Windows and therefore blanks Mac users entirely. Where is the choice to use a different platform?
Drac, the iPods support:
AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and WAV, There is also added support through iTunes for MOV, WMA, OGG and a couple other obscure ones.

Anyway, as far as portable devices are concerned, music bought from iTunes only works with iPods, so that's just as bad as Microsoft IMO....
Oh for a true multi-platform licensed format that all devices can use.....

Iain, WMA does work on the Macs, its just WMP 10 music store and the DRM that it uses that won't. So yes, they have turned down other platforms including Linux.
Music bought from iTunes does only work with iPods, but it works cross platform, there is even an (unofficial) version of iTunes for Linux now!

)I still say they all ought to get their act together and get a single DRM which will work on all platforms....It'll never happen of course

I do agree though, I wish that they would get there acts together and work with each other, unfortunately as Apple currently hold the cards it would be MS that will have to back down and support an open format for once and that, well. Its just not going to happen is it?

MP10 looks a little like iTunes and iTunes looks a little like previous versions of MP. I guess as they are both effectively doing the smae thing, it inevitable that they will look similar. MP10 gets rid of the black background (which I hated, wished i could change etc.) and replaced it with the nice alternating blue/white rows which is rather similar to iTunes but that's where the 'rip-off' ends imo. Regardless, it's certainly no reason to not try it.

Does free I Tunes allow you to rip from CD to MP3? Just discovered my bundled WinRip similar prog has its 'rip and compress to MP3' button disabled -and this was meant to be a full vers!
Also does anyone know if I transfer all these MP3 tracks with my laboriously edited track name/album/genre labels I did in Win Rip, will all this data still be valid if I switch to I Tunes [i.e is track info saved on the track itself or referenced within Win Rip?]

Yup iTunes will do this for you
Track info is stored within things called ID3 tags which will be the same in any music programme on your computer so yes, they will still be the same.

Also have a look a AudioGrabber (it's freeware). I've got a few cds which neither iTunes or Media Player would look at because of the on-cd protection (won't play in the pc), however AudioGrabber managed to extract the audio ok and created the appropriate wma/mp3 with no trouble..

Media Player 10? I think it should be named MediaStrangulation 12. Afterall it is a 12mb download and for what. It's not a player. OK, it plays, but aside from that its intentions are purely naughty!
