Default WiFi access problems - can anyone help!??

Hi there - I'm pulling my hair out on this one.

I have a Windows 2000 Toshiba Portege 2010 laptop (built-in WiFi). I'm trying to access a Netgear DG834G wifi router.

Via a cable, it works fine. However, I can't get it to work via WiFi.

Didn't have a client mgr - so downloaded one. Once running, it showed an excellent signal and the correct network name - still the default NETGEAR.

The WIFI card diagnistics are fine. Must be ok, cos it finds the network as stated above.

However, the Local Area Network symbol in the toolbar remains stubornly showing "network cable unplugged". I have disabled all security, etc. The Netgear router can see the MAC code for the laptop wifi card...so basically, the laptop can see the wifi signal, and the router can see the laptop!...but I can't get the network to connect.

Please help! Is there something simple I'm missing? some software missing?

Cheers,

G.

Have you got it setup with trusted MACs only and not entered the MAC in the table?
I assume you are initially running with WEP encryption off at the mo?

Nope - I did try trusted MAC's originally, but took all that out to test it with no security. i.e. no WEP etc.

So basically, completely open.

What I just don't understand is that my wireless card can see the network, but the network s/w can't log-on/connect. It must be some s/w or silly settings missing???

Do you have to set up a workgroup name to be the same like you do in Windows guff?

Certainly sounds like some network config software settings somewhere.....

I had a similar problem. In the end I found I'd set a limit on the number of IP addresses the router would issue.
