missing a codec to play downloaded .mpg
Must use a weird codec I haven't got in XP - the filename is XVID 6 CH DTS NiPA.mpg
I tried downloading XVID codec, but I still get message from Media Player saying "unsupported format"
Can anyone recommend a popular codec that I may not have ?

Try a free download called GSPOT
it analyses any movie file and tells you what codec it was ripped with.

GSPOT reports its an invalid stream and can't ID the codec at all. I guess I downloaded a red herring, doh!
