Question Ghost.exe

Running XP Pro latest updates etc.

What is this? Not running Norton either......

Don't think it's a virus as AVG 6.0 (latest update) hasn't found anything malicious either....

Adaware6 shows nothing either.

Won't let me delete it either as "it's in use by another person or program"

Ideas?

Dan

Ghost is a program that lets you image your hard disk to another disk, CD or network. who else uses your PC?

So, is Ghost part of XP then? I've looked at your lnks Kieran, but have come to the conclusion that it's not a Trojan.

Any other thoughts?

Cheers,

Dan

On none of the machines I support at work, and all the ones at home and friends, i have not seen ghost.exe running.

I ran AVG for a long time, but being slightly cautious of it I installed the free version of Avast. It soon found a few items which AVG hadn't found

Edit: and i had the FULL version (7) of avg installed (and updated)!!

Noticed the one XP system at work has it...not sure what it is...but it has Norton Ghost installed as part of Systemworks so I always thought it was that.

System plays up all the time, seems to suffer from terminal memory leakage - it's getting a new hard disc and a clean install from scratch at the end of the week

Avast didn't sort it, but I've got "Hiren's Boot CD" - went into DOS and did it the proper way!!!

Sorted

Thumbs up

Probably too late, but Ghost is a machine imager used for quick installation / disaster recovery.

If this is a new machine it might be that the OS was loaded from an image taken using ghost, hence the Ghost.exe that's on your disk.

Hope this helps.

ghost is part of the norton system works and as Vonzack say it is a DOS based program that allows you to take an image of your hard drive incase of a disaster. I took a ghost image of my C: drive after i completed a reinstall of XP and all my drivers. fits very nicely onto a blank dvd-r. you boot your machine using the PC-DOS boot discs, whack the image on dvd and leave it for a while. then you have a nice clean install to use. had my doubts about this piece of software especially when it booted up in DOS mode, but it has saved my bacon twice now.

cheers

Not much use when you're using ntfs drives though.....

Ghost.exe is a Norton program, but it can also equally be a virus of the same name. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Get a decent virus checker (i.e. anything other than AVG cause it's not very good) and give the system a full scan....

Perhaps they've updated it then. The last version I tried only worked with Fat and Fat32

It works with NTFS from (IIRC) version 8.0 onwards.
