A question re: apple cd writers
Hi peeps,
I have a faulty G4 CDR drive. Does it have to be a mac cdrw drive or can I just stick in a normal ide cdr drive from a pc ?
Cheers

Stu,
Fairly sure you can stick in any drive, the OS should take care of the drivers, you might want to ask on the macfixit forums just to check.
I have a 466mhz G4, here is what System Profiler says about my CD-RW drive:
SONY CD-RW CRX140E:
Manufacturer: SONY
Model: SONY CD-RW CRX140E
Revision: 1.2a
Drive Type: CD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
oh, and good luck getting the bloody thing out! I was going to swap my CD-RW drive with the DVD drive in a co-workers machine, gave up on it when I saw I was going to have to take most of the machine apart to do it!

You can stick what the hell you want in a G4.Os does take care of the drivers and i have stuck in panasonic, teac, white label all sorts in my G4 and all worked.
Only point to make is depending on what G4 you have you need to make sure that the front of the drive does not stick out too much or else you may have problems with the flap not closing and also pressing the eject button on the front may not press the actual eject button on the drive.Again depends on what G4 you have.
On the subject of G4 removal procedure, fairly easy, you just need some time, some patience and the right tools.
If you are iny doubt just go here to see how easy it is

and click on various.
have fun
