Default Starting Problems with XP

Havent used my desktop for a few days, started it up this morning and it seems to halt just before windows starts.

I get :

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\system32\config\system"

Any ideas how to rectify this??

Do you have a dual boot setup?
If so go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315233
Also, silly question maybe, but have you tried booting in Safe Mode or using the recovery console?

i had that after i updated XP with Service Pack 1. (2nd day of Broadband)

Lost everything.

Got a new hard disk installed with new copy of XP whilst I tried to fix old hard disk.

Ended up reformatting the original HD and using it as a slave now to hold downloads.

didnt need to do that!

Did what microsoft support said and it worked. Only problem was that it created another user account and kept booting into that account which had no personal settings, no favourites, no drivers, etc. Changed the user and its back to normal.

G*d*mm that's a long procedure! As an overclocker I say: reformat and start again. Just remember to keep all the useful/important stuff on another partition...
