yes, it will work, but will be slow with usb 1.0. get yourself a usb 2.0 PCI card for desktop or pc card for laptop and it will work much faster.

have a look at the usb 2.0 PCI or pc card at www.ebuyer.co.uk. as for the hdd enclosure, you might want to do-it-yourself. get the hdd enclosure and get your own hdd! have a look at www.qtds.com. or if you opt for a 2.5inch hdd, you dont need external power to power up the hdd enclosure. very portable to carry it around.

We've just bought a load for the desktop engineers to use at work - and they are a Godsend - they have a cut down backup system built in, and can stream off the data at a reasonable rate.

For backup purposes they are invaluable, but for portable storage... yeah(ish)
