Default Reducing size of PDF files?

I have a 6 page word document that I've converted to PDF using Scansoft PDF Creater.

The size of the word document is around 178K, the PDF file is over 4meg!!

Any way to make the PDF file size smaller?

Cheers

Can you change the DPI or other resolution settings?

it may be something to do with the pdf conversion, I have found most things pdf'ed to be smaller than the original.

try this, its an adobe printer driver, you just install it as a printer and select it in word to print your doc to, works a treat and wont watermark the pdf as some progs do.

Cheers mj, tried those, Acrobat PDF Writer and Acrobat Distiller. Smallest I can get the file down to is about 800K, which is better than before but takes ages to load in Acrobat Reader and graphics look awful

what format are the images in the word doc? You could try altering their resolution first then re-Distil

We use PrimeOCR amoungst other programs. It gives extremely small file sizes, but it not really a home-use app. If you want us to have a go, drop me a mail.

Our image files can be up to 1Gb a piece (large format uncompressed tiffs) and it handles them a treat

You could also try PDF995, which has a free converter.

Mike,

Did as you suggested, file size still ends up > 2meg.

The file is 6 pages of text with the first page having small GIF files in the header (21K) and footer (17K).

By removing these from the document before distilling, the finished filesize comes down to 64K. How does 38K of images equate to over 2meg in a PDF??
