Would this be a good fedora linux machine
Hi peeps,
Just after a bit of advice really. Im going to build a second machine to run either fedora core 2 or lindows and I need a little yay/nah thought.
I want to keep the cost down as much as pos hence im gonna use a duron. I dont play games so it wont make that much diff day to day usage, would it.
I was thinking od replacing the onboard VGA with a dual matrox display also
It would only be a (more or less) desktop machine but with a lot of network throughput, video watching etc (yes torrent files etc)
Asus A7V8X-MX/SE (A good board is essential, no pc chips crap) ~£30.
Duron 1800 ~£25
512 MB RAM ~£57
80 GB West Dig Hard drive (borrowed )
Sony 8x DVD+R 8xDVD-R 4x DVD+RW 24XCDRW ~£40
Would this make a good machine for linux ?

talk about overkill
You should be able to run it on a PIII 500 with a 1/2 decent gfx card (if you want windows).
Throw as much memory you can find at it (cheaply) and you are away.
If you want to network, you can pick up some 3com 905b's on ebay for about a fiver.

No but I think its a common assumption that Linux is less intensive than windows, fine if you are using just terminal mode but put any x-window system on and it can get quite bogged down. I have put gnome/kde on a couple of low spec machines and its been painful.

Naa, X is fine even on a very low end Pentium. The problem is the window/desktop manager that people run, you don't need to use KDE or GNOME or anything. I just run a plain WindowMaker under X on low end PCs and it's ideal.
