Anyone got their PDA connected to the internet?
And how do you do it?
I have got a Dell Axim running Pocket PC 2002. Can you connect a pda to a mobile phone and use GPRS? Can you get compact flash gprs data cards?
What are the different options to connect a pda to the web?
TIA

Cheers Puff, so they haven't developed the technology to get an internet connection on a pda while on the move then unless you buy a dedicated one which is really a mobile phone? Basically needs to pick up a static connection such as a home connection via WiFi if using an Axim or similar. Will have to keep to the laptop and gprs card idea then.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I use one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=50919
And one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=48544
I think it was set up as AddHoc IIRC, works well all over my house. If you need any more info PM me

Cheers MJB What I wanted to do though was to be able to connect to the web away from home on the pda. IE if I am walking around in town or want to check something while in the car (obviously not while driving ) etc.
I do want to go wireless at somestage though at home so will keep hold of the info on that router.

No not at all mate, I never made it that clear thats what I was getting at!
Its about time though they made something like a compact flash gprs modem - if they can make a pcmcia one then im sure its easy enough for them to come up with a compact flash version for pdas.
Until they do I will use the gprs pcmcia card i'm about to get, just a laptop is rather a lot bigger to carry about than a pda!
As for those bloody blackberry things (which seem to be the only thing about that matches what I want to do) that so much money has been invested in and every corporate seems to be using them, what a pile of sh!te! Why spend money on something so crap, the buttons are minute, there is no touch screen and stylus, just a roller to scroll about and they seem to spend more time being fixed than they do working! I hate supporting the bu66ers.
A decent pda like an Ipaq/Axim/Palm with mobile phone technology/gprs would be perfect and make the perfect pocket pc. Why they haven't done this is beyond me.

Thats exactly what I was after! Its sim free as well and comes with the software to connect to your mobile phone provider. Doesn't look like they have been around that long if these are the only ones available. £145 for the cheapest one isn't that bad as some of the laptop ones are that or more anyway.
This is what I was asking Orange yesterday if they were coming out with and they didn't have a clue
Will have another look later as leaving for work but nice one DJ140!

Stick your PDA on ebay and get an XDA.

Cheers Jer but my Orange contract is £3 a month which I wont be getting rid of My Axim will have everything I want if I get a gprs card as I have the gps card for it too with TomTom. Wont need a phone as that card comes with a headset to use the pda as a phone as well
Gonna have a look at the other ones available but this was the one I was looking at

there are some old Bluetooth iPAQ to GPRS config guides on my website, which may help you get set up.

OK and another question - would you be able to use a pcmcia gprs card in a pda if you had a compact flash/pcmcia adapter? Is that what the adapter does? Ah but then what about software for the pda, its not gonna happen is it lol - ar$e! Oh but what if there is generic software for a pda to use gprs? Would it just see it as a CF card and not need any additional drivers?
An adapter is only a tenner and I have a gprs pcmcia card winging its way to me for free so this would be the easiest option if it was possible

I have a Nokia 6100 with GPRS enabled and a Medion 250 PDA. The two units connect via IR and the PDA uses the phone as a GPRS modem. Everything works great. I would have thought info will be available on the Orange site.
