And there I was about to dupe post this.
Dual 2.5, mmmmmmmmm. Now, I think I DO need one of these for support, you know, for testing that our software works on them Hmm, don't think that'll fly with the boss, but I'll give it a try.
Oh and there are rumors on new displays, something about a 30 inch HD Display, now 3 of those, and a Dual 2.5 G5 would look very smart on my desk

If those display rumours turn out to be true then we could also see a lot more compatible video cards, because they aren't supposed to be using ADC on the new one. I do like the sound of a 30" High definition display though. mmm

Yeah, meant to be DVI and not ADC, the problem I have with that is that it does mean more cables, one for picture, one for power, and optionaly ones for USB and Firewire (new monitors are said to have built in firewire, not sure if current ones do, don't think so though)
Now, a 30 inch G5 Flat Panel iMac would be very very nice!

That rumour mentioned a power pack the size of a building for the 30" too. I suppose it only 1 cable though.

The liquid cooling on the Dual 2.5 looks very nice indeed.
Just created a nice BTO for the Dual and it's come in at around 10k (CAD $) hmm, think that is a bit rich for me, and I doubt the company would go for it either. Hmm, maybe an alienware PC instead? lol

Yup,
Virginia Techs G5 cluster made up of the first revision G5 2.0.
Worlds 3rd fastest (and cheapest) supercomputer - here
Although it is currently being updated with the new Dual 2.0 Xserve systems, because they take up less space.

I can't understand why they don't, each G5 is about 3 Xserves ins size, so theoretically it could be pushed to 30 + Teraflops almost as much as big blue but for less than 200 million.
Big blue was something like 4 billion for 35 TF

Virginia Tech are now "upgrading" to XServes. Apple offered them a trade-in deal. They basically got the first batch of the 2GHz dual G5s last year. This gave Apple some much needed publicity in the world of high performance computing.
Apple is now swapping them out for G5 XServes which also have ECC RAM, meaning less overhead as they no longer need to do their error correction in software.
The new 2.5GHz desktop G5 isn't watercooled in the traditional PC overclocking sense. There's no water tank, it appears to be a sealed system requiring no maintenance. Others have guessed that Apple are using this "microchannel " cooling solution http://www.cooligy.com/electrokinetic_pump.html
Disappointed that the graphics cards are still pretty poor. Quartz Extreme loves VRAM, and to see 64Mb as the standard is annoying. Hopefully the Autumn speedbump will see a new chipset with PCI-Express for the new graphics cards that will be out at the end of the year. It should also see the end of the ADC, opening up Apple's displays to the PC market without the need for expensive adaptors.
Removing the ADC will also make graphics cards physically identical across both PC and Mac platforms, with only a different BIOS needed. This should reduce costs for the graphics card makers so hopefully we will see more cards available (including some more pro cards such as the FireGL for Shake and Maya).
Still, a 500MHz bump is excellent given the problems our friends at Motorola seemed to have for much of the lifespan of the G4. Going with dual CPUs across the pro lineup also makes way for a single CPU 1.6GHz G5 iMac at the consumer end
Shame I'll miss the iTMS Europe announcement as I'll be on holiday. Back just in time for the WWDC webcast though. I wouldn't be suprised to see an iMac G5 at WWDC as Apple has been clearing the deck this week by announcing AirPort Express etc. The stage is ready...
