Speeding up LAN activity
I have 2 laptops connected to a 54mbps linksys router and 2 pc's hooked up via cat5 cable.
Now the network reading on the PCs states connected at 100mbps and the laptops report 54mbps but sometimes when im copying large files across the network it seems a bit slow so what is the next step - what sort of speeds should i be experiencing?
Cheers
David

In theory with todays technology in the standard home PC you will not see anything greater than a 30-40Mb throughput due to the limits that Hard drives are reading/writing at. Place on top of this the associated overhead to do with the TCP/IP protocol, collisions on the network and data needing to be resent, Wireless protocol overheads, yadda yadda yadda and you would be lucky to be running 5-10 Mb/s. I would guess that what you are seeing is about right.
You might be able to tweak it by installing the latest drivers, tweaking paramters on the cards and searching on the net but I find playing around with this is a law of diminishing returns.

You forgot the crappy Microsoft OS networking involvement Scott Best is to rule out MS networking first and, as suggested above, perform the same transfer using FTP. I wouldn't be entirely unsurpised if there was a large improvement in performance

In a test lap with all number of wireless signals flying around I get on average per 1GB file about 1.7-2.0 MB/sec or 13-16Mb/sec from laptop (Ether) to laptop (54g wireless) Using the same vendor on wireless, normally averages about 2.0MB-2.4MB/sec - This is based on no security overhead

One of most basic things you can do to speed things up is to turn off auto negotiate network speed. Select the correct speed for your equipment which should be 100mb. This is one of the most common causes of poor server performance because the cards are always trying to negotiate there speeds.
