W64.Rugrat.3344 a virus aimed at Win64 has been released before the OS has even shipped.

This virus does not infect 32bit PE files and does not function under common 32bit OS's like Windows 9x, NT, 2K or XP as long as no additonal software is installed which adds support for 64bit applications.

Fully aware of that. Just pointing out it must be one of the first virus' to actually hit an operating system that officially doesn't exist yet. Also one which MS is pinning much of Longhorn on.

A virus was written using .net before .net was released. I got into a whole bunch of trouble by stating in the media that it was the first .net virus, which in a way it was, but in another it wasn't!

No prob, I was just posting for other thread readers. My point which I didn't make too well, was that the virus also can affect regular 32bit OS which have 64bit support installed.

You personally, Jack, or your company? What's a .net virus? How are they different from a normal one?

64 Bit Windows Server 2003 for both Itanium and AMD64 / Opteron architectures has been available for some time, just not through normal retail channels:

XP for 64 bit is available to download Free Of Charge as a pre-release but only for AMD64 / Opteron architecures, not Itanium:

Thats beta. Its not shipping final versions yet.
