Pratical scenerio - help
Just been passed this by a collegue who going for IT job, a pratical scenerio
You come into work Mon Am, note on your desk from one directors, "I was in work yesterday and trying to copy some files from serverX to laptopY, I could not access the files, can yoiu please help, I need the files for 9.45" It is now 9am you have 45 mins to complete the task.
Server is called serverX, the file that he needs is called important files.xls and you need to analise the problem with the server, resolve it and get the files onto his laptop.
Only one in the office at the moment, What going to do, Can ring techincal manager but his battery is low and only enough for 1 call.
Site runs W2K, Active Directory and DNS.
The obvious is to ping the server see if its alive, see if you can access the files with your logon, check permission on the file, check if got any silly time restrictions on file / directors logon.
Any other ideas
Thanks
Richard

I'm with Lightning - the important thing is the director gets his files. So get a floppy disk (if it'll fit on one) or the USB disk and transfer them that way.
If the server is dead and you can't get it back then you'll have to get the files from the latest backups.... THEN you can find out what's wrong.

Yeah main thing is that Mr Director get his files (if indeed he is aupposed to be accessing these files)
then pour coke into server - problem solved.
Seriously think it will turn out to be a DNS issue
thanks for the answers

In the real world that's way too vague a description. Starting at the basics, is his account locked out? Literally in our corporate environment, the most calls our solution centres get is account lock outs. I'm not joking!
