There are no free legal music download sites like you probably mean, only free ones are homemade demo type stuff thats usually pretty crap TBH.
There are other places to download music but thats illegal and JackClarke would only post his pirate pic yet again.

i disagree sum of the free legal sites can give you gold mines
i downloaded PPK`s smash hit legally for free from there own page on mp3.com before they hit the big time years and years ago, theres sum good stuff if your prepared to hunt about, they also did a tune called "la magra" which is worthy of a release IMO
depends what exactly your looking for

Could be legal, could be illegal. I don't know but I've been using http://club.mp3search.ru/
$20 gets you 2gig of dowloads of supposedly legal tracks. Its the only place I've found where you can get complete albums without hassle and from what I can see, appears to be a legal service.

i use winmx also, a seemingly endless resource for anything musical that i wish to listen to.
my viewpoint (rightly or wrongly) that filesharing is like recording of the radio or lending/borrowing a cd from a mate and recording it. i agree royalties due to the artist will eventually kill of sales of hard copy albums, however whilst the music industry work out which way they want to sell their product, i am using technology to improve my musical tastes.
i still buy the odd cd, and am not making any commercial gain from sharing files.
i think people selling bootleg albums on every market stall and pub corner in the country is far more likely to be killing music than people sharing their music online.......
