DVD Decrypter (www.dvddecrypter.com freeware):

Use file mode to rip the entire disk to your PC

DVD2One (www.vcdhelp.com):

To compress the files to 4gb. You can retain the entire disk or just d5.1 audio and english subs etc

Then a burning application of your choice, i'd recommend Record Now Max v4.5

Talking

Also DVD copy express and Platinum - very easy single click system from start to end. Removes protection and leaves menus.

Not strictly true Steve

There will be no quality loss backing up a DVD5
On a DVD9, if you leave all the extras on and remove foreign subs and all the audio bar d5.1, there is practically no quality loss (unless you're watching it on an LCD or plasma telly)

Not strictly true Paul

There is alot of quality loss when backing up a DVD9 with "1 click" software like dvd2one, try it on a film like Underworld or Blade and you will see the difference.

For eg. If you back up the movie 'A Simple Plan' with dvd2one, the movie is compressed by 53%............not good.

For quality you need this guide http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/24_1.html which uses CCE, the results are excellent

I use http://dvdshrink.org/what.html to analyse the DVD and rip out directors commentary etc, then use http://www.elby.ch/en/products/clone_dvd to back them up.
If you need any serial numbers, PM me
I copied the entire DVD "Love Actually" the other night and it was 4.5gb, straight on a DVD @ 8x. You'd never ever know it was a backup, Clone DVD is a dierct copy and doesn't lose any quality.

Hi Corgi

Don't want this to turn into a heated debate but taking 'A Simple Plan' as an example.
If you suggest 53% compression, that makes it a 9gb DVD to kick off with?

Remove all the foreign subs and all the audio bar d5.1 and straight away, 1.5gb of that 9 is lost.
You're now looking at compressing 7.5->4.2 (40% bit-rate compression)
Should you not also want all the anorak-mans pish that's also on the disk, yuo can drop another gig. (30% compression)

I didn't suggest you would have a full DVD9 quality back-up, only that on a normal TV, you shouldn't notice pixelation and you'll still retain full surround sound.
If it's for an LCD/plasma....keep watching the original source

Dual-layer media will be with us shortly with a bit of luck, reducing the need to squeeze movies onto small disks.

Fair point Paul, i was talking about backing up the complete dvd9, as soon as you start removing subs, audio etc then as you say less compression is needed.

The guide I posted is still the best way of making a backup, I have an interest in the newsgroups and anyone who posts using any of the 1 click software, dvd2one, dvd shrink, clone dvd etc. gets flamed by everyone for wasting bandwidth with crap quality, their a fussy lot

Not that I condone that sort of behavior of course
