Get off s/n you forum *****, and do some work Matt

I got the same leaflet.

My parents got a medion PC from aldi with a monitor, and it's OK. Not any good for what I want mind you, but a P4 2.6 for e-mailing to Oz works fine

Rip off, could build an AMD 64bit system with the same spec for far less and it would be much faster

maybe you could but for people who don't want to be bothered sourcing components and building it. It's also MUCH better than what you could get from PC World for the same money

I thought it was quite a good price

So how much would it cost to build a 64bit system in your opinion.

No he wasn't u can get a prebuilt AMD 64 3200+ rig with one of the best gfx cards (256mb 9800 XT) for 7p under a grand inc vat, 17" monitor, and kickass components See my other thread about the Microland system. And yes the AMD 64 will own the P4 3ghz, infact it will own a P4 3.2ghz as well.

Mine arrives next week

For games AMD 64 is definitely better, but the jury is still out on other apps, epecially vid encoding, the P4s are much better at that currently.

lol, says who? I've seen benchies where p4s are only on a par in this area. Historically P4s use to have an advantage in Windows apps, but this is no longer the case. What do you mean the jury is out on other apps? There are no issues at all running them. The 64 is fully backward compatible wiv 32bit apps.

IMO P4 = overpriced labelled ,but good cpus If people want to pay over the odds for a brand name then so be it, but I rather save a 100 notes or so, and have something that is faster and just as stable/compatible

I never said the 64 had trouble with 32 bit apps, I'm saying that the performance differnece in a lot of things is negligible. The only area I have seen (from first hand experiance) the 64 shine is in games/gaming benchmarks.

Everywhere else the difference has not warrented the extra cost imho. But you get what you pay for, and a 3400 64 is a quick chip.

Cool

But GFX card is the biggest factor for gaming, so what difference does it make?

I have seen benchmarks where the 3.2GHz P4 beats the Athlon in most places, but realistically the end user won't notice the difference. It's like if you stick your head of a car window at 75mph, and then 85mph. You'd think it was bloody windy for both, but one is 10mph faster!

Personal preference and price should be the deciding factor at that level, not performance (unless it's for bragging rights! )
