Need a new Harddrive today!
Apart from my local independant chappy, anywhere else you can recommend I can walk into today and buy at a reasonable price something like a 40gb drive?

I'd NEVER buy one from pc world. They charge at least twice as much as you can get them elsewhere. For example, a Western Digital 120Gb drive from pc world is 149.00, whereas you can get exactly the same drive from dabs.com for only 70.00 !!!!

A friend of mine picked up a new HD from their "components" section (where everything is in brown cardboard boxes) for about 10% above online prices. When he took into account delivery and time to get it here etc the extra 5-10 quid was justified for having it then and there. The prices on their boxed HDs are a rip though as Iain says above.

If you can't wait for carrage, then I would seek out a local specialist computer shop, if their are any in your area. They're often a rip off too, and there is the pain of having to communicate to the kind of people that meant peoples home computers for a living!
My local one isn't too bad, you'll pay possibly upto 10 or in some cases 20 pounds etc, but he'll also be quite competitive on somethings. But you'll pay carraige anyway, which will make up for some of the savings online, and of course you get it in your hands today.
try yell.com etc
If you can hold off for a few days, I would go with lightnings advice, I paid 80 sods for that drive when it came out!
