Already got a linksys WAG54G ADSL router and linksys 54G PCI adapters if it helps

TIA

D-link matey..

You want a AP2000+

can work as an access point, bridge, repeater etc

I have a AP900+ (22mb) cheap if you fancy it?!

pm if you like.

Oh www.dlink.co.uk

They will run at 108mbps with other 802.11g dlink products

Unfortuantely you can not repeat with the WAG54G! You need both devices to support repeating. For example the DWL-2000AP+ will repeat with another DWL-2000AP+

As the WAG54G has a fixed antenna the only way to increase wireless coverage is to either relocate the router or buy another Access Point & hard wire it back to the WAG54G.

Unfortunately you can not repeat with the WAG54G!
Bu66er - to say the least!
Hardwiring ain't gonna happen. The DWL-2000AP+ is just an access point, right? Looks like I need an ADSL router/AP and an AP that support repeating. Any suggestions?
Your thoughts on this too please. The WAG54G is located in a converted loft space along with a lappy and a PC. These connect ok though the lappy's pcmcia Linksys card maintains a stronger signal than the PC with a PCI Linksys that less than 4 feet from the router. The real problem is the other PC (win98) that's on the ground floor. It sometimes connects and surfing is ok, sometimes reports a connection but no surfing and sometimes no connection at all. Probably looking at 4/5 walls ceilings between PC and router. Is this typical or is Linksys gear worse than D-link, for example?

DI-624+ (router/ap)
AP 2000+ (ap repeating to above)
Most std 802.11g cards will connect to the AP2000+

Both 54mbs or 108mbs if used solely with other dlink extreme products

sti555:
Thanks for that. Looks like I might have to ditch the Linksys router then.

The DI-624+ is just a router/AP. Does D-link make a 54G ADSL modem/router/AP?

sti555 - don't mean to dis you but the 624+ doesn't support repeating either + the router is a broadband router, not ADSL therefore you need an external Ethernet ADSL modem.

Wireless repeating comes in 2 forms - propriety repeating (aka d-link) or WDS repeating (official standard). Currently only a few Broadband routers support repeating. The best solution would be to get a wired ADSL router (DSL-504T) and then 2 x AP that support repeating (i.e. WG602v2, DWL-2000AP+). One thing to note though. If you wireless repeat then you can not run any form of wireless encryption on your network.

I advice customer that you should get on average a good indoor wireless signal within a 15-20m radius going through 3-4 plasterboard walls/ceiling or 2-3 standard brick walls.

Majority or manufactures offer same sort of distance due to their is a limit on power output with the EU law.

Mark - Where the 98PC is, does the laptop get a signal in the same room?

This just gets better and better

Roadrunner:
Haven't tried that yet. I've just emailed the guy who's network this is to give it whirl.
So with the equipment I've got what's my best option?

This has stuff about using the Linksys APs together.

http://toys.lerdorf.com/archives/19_..._No_Wires.html and they say
This Dual Diversity Flat Patch Antenna from HyperLink looks like it would be suitable to get a stronger signal to the far end of the house. Remember that the Linksys boxes come with this weird RP-TNC connector, so any antenna you buy for it should have a Female Reverse Polarity TNC on it.
This might be worth a look too:

Mark,

Remember, the WAG54G has a fixed antenna.

You can consider this antenna for your WMP54G though
http://www.wirelesspro.co.uk/store/c...products_id=45

However, if your laptop struggles to obtain a signal in the same room as your 98 pc then the above antenna might only marginally increase signal stability.

I'd avoid the Dlink stuff if my experience is anything to go by. Had both a DI614+ and DI624 dsl wireless router, both packed in with hardware\power faults within 6 months. Both routers were plugged in and left alone protected by surge power bars.

Have gone with the US Robotics kit, using Dlink cards 22mbps cards, which support the 22mbps*4. The USR router aloo supports SuperG and can function as an AP.

I reckon the antenna for the PCI card might be worth a shot

I've had the same problem with my WAG54G router and my WGA54G games adapter.

I phoned Linksys and they advised changing the wireless channel no.
I was sceptical at first, but it does work.

I now have XBOX live with no wires.

Scoobs_4ever:
Hadn't thought of channels. Left them set on auto as every other wireless deivce has worked fine. Did Linksys suggest any particular channel or just pick one?

Linksys didn't advise me to use any channel in particular. They suggested that the weak signal could be due to interference, from a number of sources e.g. micorwaves, other wireless networks

Its a case of trial and error I'm afraid. I think there are 13 to choose from!!

Fair enough. I'll start with channel 1
