Which Broadband ISP?

Which Broadband ISP?
I know that this might have been done to death but as technology moves on so quickly I have to ask which provider should I choose?
I can't afford the 1mb broadband at £30 + but about £27 a month isn't a problem.
I'm currently with AOL but I don't mind moving on for the best deal
Moderators.....please don't move this to Computer related as I need a quick answer and preferably want to choose tonight.
Thanks in advance

pipex look good or plusnet
personally i went for virgin at 25 a month
main reason is their flexibility
no 12 month contract, no sign on fee, also they do a modem for 9.99
most places either have a 12m contract or if not you have to pay 50 quid joining fee

I'm with Pipex and have been for 8 months.
Excellent connection speed (512k) for £23.44 a month. Just upgraded to a 1M line at £32 which is awsome.
There's no setup fee but there is a cost of around £20 to buy the usb modem, and it is a 12 month contract.
I'd certainly recommend Pipex.

have a look at www.bulldogdsl.com for their off-peak 1mb or 2mb line. you get 1 month free line rental (or usb modem). only bummer is the £60 activation fees. also have a look at www.cpbb.co.uk.
if you are happy with 512k, pipex is a good choice coz there's no activation fees if you stay with them for 1 year. always consider the activation cost, not just the month line rental.

I'd recommend Pipex too - especially if you're new to Broadband. I was, an teh website is brilliant. V helpful.
I decided to leave the modem and delve straight into an ADSL router
Great.

Fantastic response! Thanks very much...I've now discovered that I need at least Windows 98 SE to upgrade.. I'm on 98 at the moment.
Sounds like another computer is required

Can w98 not be updated to w98se by a free download on the net ??
will be very interested in finding this out myself as broadband impending here also and only running an early edition off w98 also here, so may have to update myself to this se edition ??!!
if this w98se version does have to be purchased, any recommendations for a cheap source ??
cheers,
john...

They don't support P2P applications - which might be a problem, but isn't for me.
I don't believe you can upgrade to Win98SE via download - even if you can, imagine the size of the download without broadband... But you can get an OEM version of WinXP for £60 (you can buy a pack of 10 cable grips, to qualify for the OEM part - any hardware will do). Make sure you're on at least 128Mb of RAM though.

I don't know why they've (meaning everyone who can shaft you for more money) got it in for P2P - it's not actually illegal to use, as long as you are not using it illegally. Errr...
For instance, it's perfectly legal to pull a track if you already own that track on CD/Tape/Record/whatever - with the caveat that it must be exactly the same track with no more or less. Funnily though, you don't ever own a CD - the publishers reserve the right to confiscate it at any time - only the tracks that are on it.
Strange world (or perhaps it's just this bit of it).

I think ISP's that have "no P2P" clauses in their T's&C's put them there so they can pull the plug on extreme P2P users who continually use up a large amout of bandwidth which would reduce the service quality for other users.
I didn't think it was legal to download a track of the net even if you already own a legitimate copy of it, rather that doing so is just (generally) ignored. AFAIK, there is no "fair use" clause in UK law like the USA has.
