Hi Lee,
Lots of people on here know the answer to this but in doing so will probably open up a can of worms in terms of work
Basically you host your site anywhere you wish, and it doesnt have to be with the domain hosters.
If you're starting out I'd tend to recomend sticking with one company as there's a lot less faff involved. Let us know who you got your domain through and we'll let you know where you can go from there, but I'd recomend www.oneandone.co.uk for hosting as I'm using them at the moment and they're pretty good.
I'm sure there are others on here that will recomend other companies etc and I think there is someone in the scooby community that runs a hosting facility but I cant find the link atm.
Best bet might just be to ring one and one and see what you're options are. They do a great deal for £4.99 if you just want to start up putting a few static html pages up etc.

if you got free web space like from your ISP, you can point your domain name to the web space, but i think this is subject to the domain name company you are with supporting this.
i got my web hosting and domain name for about £20/year at www.hostplus.co.uk. yes, it is a lot easier having both web hosting and domain name with one company!

got my domain with oneandone and at the minute redirected to my webspace with yahoo (free) but ive seen webhosting for £19 a year which seems good and oneandone being around £5 a month which is quite a bit more, I was thinking that it had to be all together with the same webhost so that its better when a search is done with say google and would have a better chance of getting near the top of a search, does this make any sense?

Stay well awayfrom Hostplus
Hostplus have been unreliable and their support is presumptive and rude, although quite responsive!
Downtime seems a frequent problem. They lost the whole site and all webmail last year as a server crashed and their back-up failed. In addition, I couldn't access my site or webmail all morning.. Will be going elsewhere come renewal time!

im just in the process of striking a deal with the company i currently work for to supply hosting as a reseller. We are a world wide host and have 99.999 uptime guaranteed, currently running at 100% for last 2 years.
Im working on the pricing but its gonna start around £3 a month. All PHP, MySQL, enabled and loads other stuff installed including ecommerce, PHPBB etc etc. If anyone is interested please drop me aline for full specs etc

I was/still am a big user of 1&1 and have been for several years and always recommend them, although recently they have been shocking, deleting my php scripts without telling me, email outages like you wouldnt believe, very poor response to emails. Im with titan now cos Id heard good things on here, too early to say at the moment but everything is cool.

I use http://www.bargain-hosting.net/ I use the silver account which costs 5.99 a month rather than the 6.99 it says on the site. They also have a bronze account which costs £20 a year
