Smile Hard disk mirroring software

Can anyone recommend a freeware, or low cost mirroring solution for a Windows XP PC, not server?

With the cost of drives so cheap, it makes sense to install 2 drives and mirror the contents of both, in case of drive failure.

Your help would be appreciated.

Why not buy a cheap IDE RAID controller and do hardware mirroring?

I didn't think about a hardware controller. Any recommendations as to which one I should go for?

Don't know if it's the cheapest, but here's a £43 controller from Scan: http://web6.scan.co.uk/Products/Info.asp?WPID=12540. If that's typical, you may find better value for money in buying a replacement motherboard with inclusive RAID controller. Unless you current mobo is top-notch, of course. KT333 boards with RAID can be had from £50-ish.

Tekram, Highpoint or Promise make decent IDE raid controllers.

What about this one? http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/...34&cat=&page=1

Thanks for the info, it looks like a bit of research is in order. I've also seen an Adaptec one, I know they have a good name in SCSI controllers, presumably they do decent IDE boards.

To answer your original question have a look on www.ariolic.com. They do a product called Active Smart which is quite good

From what I can see Active Smart doesn't actually mirror any data. It just keeps monitoring the discs using S.M.A.R.T. technology to notify you of potential problems before they actualy destroy any of your data.

So, no it doesn't answer his original question

Adaptec 1200A is a pretty solid basic RAID card. Have used a couple in boxes when on a tight budget.

Chris.
