Epson printer - help required please
Following on from my previous printer thread I went out and bought a new black cartridge and installed this with a new colour one I already had. I have done about 20 head cleans to get the ink to come through. I printed one document over the weekend of about 15 pages and then gone to use the printer today and guess what no more black ink again Colour ink is only just coming thorough and is very sketchy. I had a look inside the printer and towards the right end where the cartridges normally park there are some little foam pads. These are soaked in both colour and black ink.
I thought I would have a look on the Epson home page and there was a support tool where you connect to chat to a support person. Did this and she said call their repair centre. So I did and they want £60 plus vat plus parts. That smore than what a new one costs!
Has anyone repaired there own home printer or know of problems with blocked/leaky nozzles etc. I don't want to have to buy a new printer as when my current one works its fantastic, but to professionally repair it is going to cost more than a new one which is ridiculous
Its a stylus colour 760.
Any help much appreciated.

All our epson printers went like this after a while..
(does the 760 cartridges have chips on them?)
U can get a bottle of ink jet flush stuff, i know jr do one alonge with the refill inks, u just fill the old cart with the solvent and run it through the cleaning cycles. also a squirt on those foam pads(pull power plug while print head is over paper etc) seems to clean underside or print heads better 2.

MJ no I hadn't but want to now! Is it something you can get in the high street shops or only off the net? Also how do you put that stuff in the old cartridges?
As for the chips I don't think so
Can those sponges be taken out and cleaned do you know?

U use a/the syringe/needle that comes with ink refil packs, basically needle thru hole intop or cart (hidden by sticker) and fill..
Havn't tried removing sponges..

My Stylus 750 is ok. Works fine if i use it often but clogs if left, but usually ok after 2-3 cleans.
I did buy some cheap 'chinese imported' cartridges at on stage and they were a nightmare, cleaning all the time so ran out quickly. I now buy PC Line ones from dixons (got a colour cartridge saturday for £4.99) and they last well and generally don't block often.

Thanks guys.
I went to PCWorld this evening and bought a blank ink refill pack (two bottles) and a cleaning fuid pack (2 bottles). After much tarting about I have finally got my printer back to reasonable photo printing quality It took a while just to get black out of it and then some more work getting it to print colour and black in the right spectrum but all is good now
Still some work to get the quality to 100% like the quality it used to be but I certainly wont leave it a year between uses again.
I had been advised today by several repair shops and by Epson themselves today that I needed a new printer and that it was not cost effective (new print head £80) to repair mine although one did offer to have a look to see if it was fixable. Also never to use compatable cartridges as they don't contain the cleaning agent the manufactures cartridges contain (a mistake I wont make again).
It has cost me £35 in one new cartridge (£15) and the stuff I bought tonight (approx £10 each for the 2 kits) which is a damn site better than a new printer or loads more cartridges. Time wise it has taken me hours but well worth the effort and now have a nice pic of me, the gf and my son from on holiday sitting framed in the kitchen Will do regular printing from now to keep it unblocked although I have put some cleaning fluid in with each cartridge to keep them flowing freely.
Cheers again for the help

I *think* that you should leave the printer switched on all the time. Every time you boot up your PC the printer will do one of its cleaning/charging cycles.
thus helping to prevent the heads from blocking.
Probably
