Most likely Netsky.B and MyDoom - we are getting a lot of of mail stopped by antivirus on our mail server at work due to these two!

same here.

Ever since the btopenworld addy I have has gone to bt.yahoo I have seen a HUGE increase. Fortunately they all seem to be getting caught. One of the last batch had "kev@ scoobyclinic.fsnet..." as the sender. If someone knows him let him know.

how do you stop them
You can't, what you can do is put things in place so that once they arrive at your mailbox they are cleaned and removed. Look in to a virus package with mail scanning Norton and McAfee both do this plus many others.

Make sure your virus definitions are up to date, I check at least daily automatically.

Look at installing a SPAM filter, again if you get Norton Internet Security you get a mail SPAM filter and Norton AV in one package. You can then add certain phrases and mail address as SPAM and it will remove them from your inbox to a holding area. You can then let it "learn" what is an isn't SPAM as it will monitor what you send and recieve and using heuristics etc will learn what is likely to be SPAM and thus may also have a virus.

Remember that the vast majority of e-mail viruses now spoof the "From" field.

Hence, just because it says the mail is from Fred@Bloggs.com, that does not mean that user has sent you the virus Don't bother trying to mail the person it's "from" because they probably didn't send it. On top of spoofing the from address, the viruses may also change the name in front of the @ sign to something random.

This mass-mailing, memory-resident worm uses its own SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) engine to propagate.

It sends out email messages with a spoofed return address to target recipients, which it gathers from an infected system. The email message that it sends out has varying details.

Cheers

I appreciate that attachments should be treated with utmost caution but can a virus be introduced simply by opening the e-mail itself? I have had contradictory information on this from "No", to "Most Unlikely" to "Yes" Thanks, DL

In early versions of Outlook/Outlook Express there was a risk of script based viruses being run when they opened accidentally in the preview pane (if you have it enabled). Nowadays that is highly unlikley as active content is disabled in the preview pane, and only less harmful malformed email type exploits are exposed by the preview pane or when opening the mail itself.

Virtually all viruses now require the user to make the conscious decision to open the attachment. Doesn't stop people doing it though!

As ajm has said you need to click on the attachment to get the file to run afaik
However going to some WWW sites can download viruses automatically through your browser

You need to make sure that your OS is running the latest version.
Use the Windows update as often as possible to check for the latest version of OS updates.
Do this and use virus killer and firewall you should be OK.
