Question File/Volume Compression on Win2000

Hi,

I seem to have just about filled up my 120GB second HD with my home videos. I was concidering using the compression option on some of the folders (maybe the entier disk). Does this cause any issues with read/write speeds to the files? Is it a "safe" option?

Well, difficult questions, I would say it is not unsafe and it should not slow down your PC too much. But if you will try to compress video files, you may find that you are not getting good compression ratio, because those files are already compressed.

The files are captured AVI video (DV Codec) from my camcorder. I've been checking the Microsoft website and it says that read times should not be effected but write will be. As I will not be writing to these files (only reading from them in the video editor) I'm hoping it should be OK. Not sure how much they will compress by, but it should give me some extra space until I get another HDD sorted.Cheers

Well, after compressing for 4 hours my 81GB of DV AVI I made a grand saving of....

1 GB!!! Woopee....

Oh well. Time to save for a third HDD then. Unless there's a better way for archive 100GB+ of data?
