Ok, I have conquered DCC!

Some hints and tips.

I am using a Belkin Parallel Cable and am connecting a Win98 machine to a Win2000 machine.

Use NetBUI (spelling?), TCP/IP does not seem to work and IPX kept disconnecting. You obviously need to use the same at both ends.

The User not recognised in DOMAIN problem is a known MS bug. You need to go to File and Printer Sharing and select properties (on the Win2000 machine). There you select security and then advanced - there is a check box for using Early Versions of MS CHAPS, select this (it is the only box unchecked from memory).

The final problem is that Win2000 has another bug that disconnects after about 20s. You can apply the service pack or is you use NetBUI it does not seem to be so much of a problem.

Finally to see the share you will need to force Browse Master to be enabled. Set LM Announce to NO. These can be found in network properties.

Cool.

With the parallel cable the connection speed is 4Mbps which is much faster than I was led to believe.

It has just taken me 25mins to move 55MB of data, so it is very usable.

Thanks to all of you who tried to help yesterday.

Just thought I would share my experience in return, a lot of people seem to have problems with this!

Cheers,

Trout

phew!! that took some doing.

bit worrying that 6-7 years ago you could link 2 DOS machines with a serial cable and have them connected in 30 secs!!

that's progress for you!

I remember playing Warcraft 1 for hours on a serial link whilst at Uni. That was back in 95/96.

You can also buy a special USB cable that will link two USB equipped PC's together to allow data transfer.
