How to delete Windows Messenger? (on XP)
Not the horrible pop-up thing but the messenger service similar to MSN messenger. I've just set my dad's MSN messenger to auto run every time he logs on but the Windows Messenger logs him straight off again and and says he's logged on at another location.
I did it on my own pc but it was ages ago and I've forgotten what I did
Cheers
Sal

If you want to uninstall Windows Messenger (taken from http://www.activewin.com/tips/tips/m...gistry/4.shtml)...
On XP Systems without SP1:
Click Start / Run Then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows
On XP Systems WITH SP 1:
Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs
Click on "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left
UNcheck "Windows Messenger"
Click "NEXT"
Click "Finish"
Reboot
On XP Systems without SP1:
Click Start / Run Then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows
On XP Systems WITH SP 1:

I remember having the same problem myself about a year ago and managed to get rid of it but can't remember how (old age )

I always use this method, after closing anything that might try to use messenger (IE/OE etc.)
Click Start / Run Then type:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows
There is another method (not recommended) that involves editing a system file to make Windows Messenger visible in Add/Remove Programs.
If the above does not work, do a google for "Remove Messenger" XP, will bring up loads of suggestions.

Is easy Sal. It's running because it's automatically doing it through Outlook or Outlook Express
Go to Tools in Outlook/Outlook Express
Then Options
The General tab
and untick Automatically log on to Windows Messenger
Then close Outlook - re-boot PC and see if it has stopped it.

in program files right click on the messenger folder and rename to "messengerOFF" this seem to work a treat, simple if thats the messenger you want rid of.

I just updated to MSN Messanger 6.1 on XP Pro.
Ever since it has:
a) paused when my Inbox has been loaded (i.e. after it says Done)
b) intermitantly put a solid black box next to the Messanger icon in my sys tray.
Any ideas which, if any of the above will clear all this up ?
Cheers.

There was a known "glitch" in Windows Messenger which caused the bundled version to ignore your attempts to stop it auto-running
