Question

My dad has bought a SATA drive. It's all in ok and seems to be working. Its recognised in windows (as a second drive) and you can copy to it etc.

However, now we want to use it as the system drive. Windows XP setup shows the IDE disk, but not the SATA one. I've also tried unplugging the IDE one and trying setup. Then it does show the SATA disk and allow you to select it for setup. However setup then gets a STOP error and ***** off.

Don't mind unplugging the IDE drive to do the install, and then setting it not bootable - but how do we get Windows to install on the SATA???

Thanks in advance,

Andy

You'll need to save some files to a floppy...

they'll look similar to these.

On boot up from CD (new install) keep an eye on task bar at the bottom,
When it asks to install 3rd party drivers hit the (F6 I think) key (it tells you which one anyway)

It'll seem like it took no notice of your key command to start with but then it will stop and ask you to insert / install those drivers...

and to add to that, I'd leave the IDE discs unplugged until all is installed on the SATA to prevent confusion.

All working now, i Brought a floppy home from work and used the drivers on the CD (as yours made it die still).

However I can't get the IDE drive to **** off when it's plugged in. It always gets to boot instead of the nice fresh windows installation on the SATA disk.

Is downloading partition magic gonna help me (remove boot sector on IDE drive) or do i need to change the IRQ on the SATA and IDE controllers somehow???

Somewhere in the BIOS you'll be able to choose the boot device and order - Flopp/CD/IDE etc. You should have an option for your SATA contoller.

Yea, change the first boot device to "SCSI" should sort you out.

This is doing my **** in

I did a nice new install of WinXP on the SATA drive the other night, and did all the updates etc. It was working fine.

I've just set it to boot from scsi device first, and as the "Loading windows XP" screen fades into view it locks up. Before the bar even appears to start moving, the screen is just dim where it hasn't faded up fully grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
