a crap PC, your problem is probably related to paging. This is when the machine runs out of ram it stars using the hard drive as extra ram, which considerably slows things down. Look at your hard drive light and i bet it flashes every time the movie jerks.

Are you refering to when you 'back up' a film??

if so, you maybe burning the DVD too fast..

i.e. you may be burning @ 4x

try burning it at 2x instead and see if it works....

I've heard that some disc's even though they say they are 4x some writers will not write them at that speed (compatibility)

cheers

Crap PC ? Paging ?. Pretty sure an athlon 800 with 256Mb RAM should handle DVD playback

Far more likely you need DMA enabled on your new drive.

Under WIn2K. Go to the device manager. Find the IDE controller your DVD is on. Right Click on it - go to properties. Under advanced settings check "Transfer Mode" is "DMA if available".

For Win 98 I forget the details but it will be similair - have a google for something like "Win98 enable dma dvd"

Thumbs up

Deano's suggestion sounds the most likley culprit.

Also check what other apps you have running in the background. I used to get problems with my Infra-Red switched on because it was scanning for new devices every 5 seconds.

If none of he above work, try alternative DVD playback software.

Just a thought, DVD-RW typically don't read at 16x
I know my 105's needed flashed to read at 12x from the manufacturers setting of 8x
This could be a contributing factor. Better to buy a £15 DVD-rom, this will prolong the life of the laser in your burner.

The spec of your machine is more than adequate to cope with DVD playback although it is borderline spec for running dvd burning software efficiently.

As deano suggested, check that the system is still running DMA and has not reverted to PIO (this can happen if you don't shut-down properly)
